Perkins was born and raised in New Baltimore, Michigan, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Western Michigan in 1995. She was on the theatrical stage, and than she moved to TV, where she appeared as a guest in over thirty shows such as C.S.I., Without a Trace, How I Met Your Mother, Pizzica/Infila, Grey's Anatomy, and Castle.
Perkins is best known for her regular role in the Showtime comedy series Episodes. In 2013, she played the lead role in the NBC’s The Gates. Sul grande schermo, she appeared in Enough Said (2013) and Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks (2014).
