Wen starred in the daytime soap opera As the World Turns before her breakthrough with the lead role in the film The Joy Luck Club (1993). Her next significant role was in the movie Street Fighter (1994), and in 1998 she made her debut on the Broadway stage. Wen is well known for scoring the main character of the cartoon Mulan (1998), which brought her the Annie Award.
Wen achieved fame for her role as Dr. Jing-Mei Debra Deb Chen in the NBC television series ER. Then she appeared in the series Inconceivable, Vanished, and Stargate Universe. At the end of 2012, Wen was invited to one of the leading roles in the ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
